1.9 - The Combat Update

Arguably the most controversial update in the history of Minecraft, 1.9 changed Minecraft's combat system from the spam-clicking punch-up it had been previously to a more refined, skill-based timer system. Many PvP-fans hated this change so much, they still play on pre-1.9 servers to this day.

The Combat Update did far more than change fighting, though - most notably, it added End Cities, and while their native Shulkers wouldn't find much use for several more months, the Elytras the cities held were incredible.
